Passage2

Dear General Editor,

I have heard that the newspaper office of our school is employing new part-time editors. I want to get the job. I’m Li Hua, a student of Class One, Grade Three inZhongshanMiddle School. I’ve learned that our newspaper office is developing day by day, and the newspaper has a large population of readers now. It would be an honor for me if I can work for our school. I have had my articles published in some newspapers and magazines. I know something about the job of editing. If I can get the job, I will work hard to provide more wonderful articles for the readers. I look forward to your reply. Best wishes,Yours, Li Hua

Passage3

Should Students Take Part-time Jobs?

Nowadays, more and more students are willing to do part-time jobs. They work as shop assistants, typists, waiters, salesmen, etc. Thus there are many discussions about whether students should take part-time jobs. I am in favor of taking part-time jobs, because it brings many advantages to students. By doing part-time jobs, they can earn money on their own so that they can reduce their parents’ burden. Besides, taking part-time jobs can help them get social experience, develop personal abilities and make their lives more colorful. What’s more, it can let students know the society by themselves. In a word, students should take part-time jobs as long as they can keep a balance between study and work.

Passage4

Nowadays a lot of schools keep their students on the campus all day long. Students have different opinions about it. Some of the students argue that they rarely enjoy freedom and have few chances to get in touch with society. They can’t fully develop their interests and hobbies. Therefore, they have lost interests in their studies. Others think the school is the best place to get knowledge so they should put their heart into their lessons. Some students lack the ability to control themselves. Once out of school, they may addict themselves to some games which will affect their studies. Personally, I think it is necessary to keep students at school. But at the same time, schools should organize various activities so that students can enjoy their school life.

Passage5

Recently a survey has been carried out about the health condition of the students of our city. Here we present the result of the survey which shows that the health of the students has been going from bad to worse in the past three years. As we can see in the chart, the percentage of nearsighted students has increased from 78.2% in 2004 to 92.5% in 2007, while that of overweight, from 36% to 52.4%. Nearly 10% more of the students suffer from lack of sleep. Besides, over 15% more have become mentally unhealthy. There are several reasons for the decline of the health of the students. Above all, the students are burdened with too much homework, resulting in lack of sleep, less exercise, damage to eyesight and so on. The heavy burden of homework lies in the fierce competition, which leads to great anxiety, that is, mental illness. It is urgent that something should be done to improve the health condition of the students, the most important of which is to reduce their load of homework.

Passage6

Most of us feel nervous before we’re taking an important exam. Some will feel dizzy or tired, some will suffer from lack of sleep, and some will lose their appetite. In fact, all these symptoms have terrible effects on our exams and we are all eager to get rid of them. First of all, in my opinion, it’s important for us to have a right attitude toward exams. They are only a means of checking how we are getting along with our studies, so there is no need to worry too much about the results. Study hard every day and make careful plans for every exam. In this way we can avoid suffering from the pressure of exams. Besides, enough sleep can make us energetic and enable us to perform well in an exam. Therefore, during the period of exams, we should not stay up too late. We can also try a warm bath or a cup of warm milk before going to bed. They might help us to have a sound sleep. We’d better go out for a walk or do some outdoor exercises before and during an exam so that we can keep ourselves relaxed and then concentrate ourselves on exams.

Passage7

This morning I was on my way to school at seven o’clock, when suddenly I saw a boy was knocked down by a car. Hurriedly, I ran over and found that the boy was hurt and that there was much blood on his face. Immediately, I called an ambulance and the boy was taken to the nearest hospital. After learning that the boy was fine and would recover in a few days, I went away without giving my name. As the proverb says,“Helping others is the source of happiness”, I’m happy for what I have done. And, we should do things to make the world a better place to live in.

Passage8

On the morning of October 1st, our class organized an environmental protection activity in the nearby park. On arriving there, we were divided into three groups. The first group collected the rubbish, such as the waste paper, cigarette ends, plastic bags and so on. The second group set up several boards to remind the visitors to take care of the flowers and trees. The last group gave a speech to the visitors on the danger of “white pollution” and the importance of protecting the environment. I think it is very important for us to protect the environment. For the sake of people’s health and happiness, measures should be taken to control and prevent pollution, and everyone should make a contribution to it.

Passage9

Which Do You Prefer,Private Cars or Public Transport? According to the passage, private cars have become popular as means of transportation in big cities. So, the government has made some decisions to ease pollution caused by transportation. Owning a private car seems to be a symbol of wealth and no one can deny its convenience, but driving a car is more expensive. Besides, cars cause air pollution. Using public transport like subway and buses is much cheaper, but it is sometimes slow and the buses are always crowded. InGuangzhou, we have very serious traffic problems with the increasing number of private cars, such as traffic jams, oil shortage, etc. Cars can hardly move in rush hours. My parents planned to buy a car, but I insisted that we should use public transportation. For the sake of a better place to live in, I decided not to buy a car even if I can afford it someday.

Passage10

Good Luck Always Comes with Hard Work

It is hard work rather than luck that brings people success. Those who are considered to be successful must have been working hard to achieve their goals and their success can also benefit others. Some people argue that one can not succeed unless he works very hard. There are many examples to show that success comes from hard work. One example is that of Madam Curie who had been working all day and all night before she made the great discovery of radium. Other people think that luck and opportunity are more important than hard work. They argue that even if one works hard, he can not succeed without luck and opportunity. For instance, a film star, could never be famous if she was not given a chance to play a role in the film. I think that both hard work and good luck are important. If one wants to be successful, he has to work hard on one hand and he has to seize the opportunity and luck on the other hand. These two factors are essential for one’s success.
